1. Gratitude to the Sun: Without the Sun, agriculture is impossible. Pongal marks the start of Uttarayana—the Sun’s six-month journey northward—bringing warmer days and the promise of a bountiful yield.

2. Honoring Farm Animals: Agriculture in India is a team effort. The third day, Mattu Pongal, is specifically dedicated to cattle (cows and bulls) that help plough the fields and provide milk.

3. New Beginnings: Coinciding with the start of the Tamil month Thai, it is believed that “Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum” (With the birth of the month of Thai, a new way will open), marking a period for solving old problems and starting fresh.
