Tech Layoffs In 2023

Tech companies across the world have been laying off people in recent months, citing fears of an economic slowdown and lack of demand. Many companies have fired thousands of people at once or sacked their entire teams. According to the latest data from Layoffs.fyi, since the beginning of the year 2023, around 332 tech companies have laid off 1,00,746 employees. Most of the layoffs have been done by giants like Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, and Amazon. Google has laid off 6 percent of its total workforce or around 12,000 employees, the most among all companies.

Microsoft let go of 10,000 employees, while Amazon laid off around 8,000. Apart from these, Salesforce has laid off 8,000 employees, Dell 6,650, IBM around 3,900, SAP around 3,000, Zoom around 1,300, and Coinbase around 950.

Yahoo is the latest in the list of tech companies to lay off. Yahoo has announced to lay off 20 percent or about 1600 employees working in its ed-tech business.

Yahoo told last Thursday that today is the last day of the job for 12 percent of the employees (1,000 employees). At the same time, the remaining 8 percent, or 600 employees will lose their jobs within the next 6 months. The layoffs will affect about half of Yahoo’s ed-tech business.

Microsoft-owned GitHub has also announced layoffs of around 10 percent or 300 employees in the coming quarter. The company will vacate its offices at multiple locations and switch to fully remote working as soon as its rental agreements expire.
