On October 11, Reliance Jio recorded an average download speed of around 600 Mbps on its 5G network in New Delhi, while India’s overall 5G speed jumped to 500 Mbps with the launch of 5G services in the country.

According to Ookla reports, telecom operators are testing their networks and have seen a wide range of 5G download speeds – from low double digits (16.27 Mbps) to 809.94 Mbps.

The report said, “This data points to the fact that operators are still recalibrating their networks. Speeds are expected to be more stable as these networks enter the commercial phase”.

Ookla compared average 5G download speeds across four cities where both Jio and Airtel have built their networks.

As seen in New Delhi, Airtel reached an average download speed of around 200 Mbps at 196.98 Mbps, while Reliance Jio broke the average download speed of around 600 Mbps (599.58 Mbps).

In Kolkata, the average download speed of operators was found to be the highest since June. Airtel’s average download speed was found to be 33.83 Mbps while Jio’s average download speed was seen as 482.02 Mbps.

In Mumbai, Airtel has reached 271.07 Mbps average download speed since June, compared to Jio’s 515.38 Mbps average download.

In Varanasi, Jio and Airtel found close to average download speeds, with Airtel achieving a 516.57 Mbps average download speed of Jio since June 2022 at 485.22 Mbps.

As per the report, Bharti Airtel has launched its 5G services in eight cities so far and Jio’s 5G beta test “Jio True 5G for All” is also available for four cities i.e. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Varanasi till now.

According to a recent consumer survey by Ookla, 89 percent of Indian smartphone users are ready to upgrade to 5G.

The report said that “the new 5G results show that 5G speeds are much better than the current network in India. While we need to approach these initial results with caution”.

According to the Speedtest Global Index, India’s download speed stood at 13.52 Mbps in August, ranking 117th in the world in terms of speed.

Hyderabad is the only city where all operators have seen significant growth in terms of 5G-enabled devices, with Jio tripling its install base center.
