Ramayan: Why Laxman did not sleep for 14 years, know the whole story here
Friends, everyone in the world knows the great love of Lord Shri Ram and his younger brother Laxman, but do you know that once Shri Ram also doubted his beloved brother? After which sage Agastya had said that even Lord Rama himself could not kill Ravana’s son Meghnath i.e. Indrajit, only Lakshmana could kill him. Now to know why Rishivar said this, we tell you about a story from Ramayana.
Once August Muni Ramnagari came to Ayodhya and talks started about the Lanka war. Even then Shri Ram told how he killed heroes like Ravana and Kumbhkaran and his brother Lakshmana also killed heroic giants like Indrajit and Atikaya.
After listening to God, Agastya Muni said that there is no doubt that Ravana and Kumbhkaran were very brave, but the biggest brave warrior was Inderjit. He fought with Devraj Indra and took him captive to Lanka.
After which Brahma Ji asked Indradev for a donation from him, then he freed him and Laxman killed him and only he could kill him. Shri Ram was more pleased to hear Laxman’s praise from Munivar’s mouth but he was also surprised that what was it that only Laxman could kill him. The Lord expressed his curiosity in front of Agastya Muni.
Then Muni said that Indrajit had a boon that he could be killed only by one who had not slept for 14 years, who had not seen the face of a woman for 14 years, who had not eaten food for 14 years.
After listening to Muni, Shri Ram said, I kept giving fruits and flowers to Laxman’s share regularly for 14 years in exile. He said that I used to live in a cottage with Janaki, and Laxman was with me in the next cottage, then how can this happen if I have not even seen Sita’s face and slept for 14 years?
August Muni smiled after understanding the words of God, but now something is hidden from God. Because everyone used to praise Lord Rama only but Lord wanted that Lakshmana’s tenacity and bravery should be discussed in every house of Ayodhya as Muni said that only Lakshmana could kill Indrajit, just like that after his death Maharaj Vibhishan also told Lord Shriram that the gods couldn’t kill Meghnath, the son of Ravana. Only a great yogi like Lakshman ji could put him to death.
After all the talk, Agast Muni said to the Lord, why not ask Laxman ji about this, then when Laxman ji came, Shri Ram said whatever is asked from you, tell the truth. God asked we were together for 14 years, yet how did you not see Janaki’s face, gave fruits, yet how did you remain non-vegetarian and did not sleep for 14 years, how did this happen?
Then Lakshman ji told his elder brother when we went to the front mountain in search of sister-in-law, Sugriva asked us to identify her by showing her ornaments. Didn’t even see above his feet.
Regarding not sleeping for the same 14 years, he said that you and your mother used to sleep in a hut, so I used to stand guard outside the whole night with an arrow on the bow. Nindra Devi tried to guard my eyes, so I pierced Nindra with my arrows. Finally, Nindra accepted defeat and said that she will not touch me for 14 years, but when Shri Ram will be coronated in Ayodhya and I will stand behind her like a servant with a roof then she will surround me. Brother, you will remember that the umbrella fell from my hand during the coronation.
Laxman ji further told that when he used to bring fruits and flowers, he used to divide them into three parts, giving one part to me, you used to say, Laxman, keep the fruit, you never asked me to eat the fruit, then how can I eat it without your permission. I kept them carefully, all the fruits must still be kept in the same cottage. After that, on the orders of God, Lakshman ji brought all the fruit baskets from Chitrakoot’s hut and kept them in the royal court.
Then the fruits were counted but there were no fruits for 7 days then Lord Rama asked what was the diet you had for 7 days?
Responding to God’s words, Laxman ji said that we remained fasting on the day we got the information about the death of our father,
after that, when Ravana abducted Mother Sita, we remained fasting on that day as well.
He said that on the day when you were praying to the sea and asking for a way from it, on that day also we remained without food.
When we remained unconscious for the whole day after being trapped in the cobweb of Indrajit, we remained fast that day too.
And the day Meghnath cut off the head of the elusive Sita, we were in awe.
Apart from this, the day Meghnath killed me and the day you killed Ravana, we remained fast during these 7 days.
Laxman ji completed his point and said that he had learned an additional knowledge from Guru Vishwamitra, with this knowledge that a man can live even without taking food, with the same knowledge I also controlled my hunger and killed the evil Meghnath.
Hearing all the words of Lakshman ji, the Lord became emotional and he embraced him.
