- 1. Aryabhata was built by ISRO for conducting experiments in X-ray astronomy, aeronautics, and solar physics. This spaceship was a 26-sided polygon, 1.4 meters in diameter.
- 2. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi named this satellite after the famous 5th-century Indian astronomer and mathematician Aryabhata.
- 3. Aryabhata weighing 360 kg was launched by Russia (then USSR) Kosmos-3M launch vehicle. Aryabhata was launched from Kapustin Yar, famous as a rocket launch and development site in Russia.
- 6. The spacecraft fell before launching. Due to this the electrical power system of the satellite stopped working. It took another 4 days to repair and get ready for launch again.
- 7. The cost of this project was estimated at Rs 3 crore, but due to extra expenditure, its cost increased further.
- 8. The Reserve Bank of India celebrated this historic launch. Its picture was printed on the two rupee note, which was in circulation between the years 1976 and 1997.
- 9. To commemorate the event, both India and Russia released commemorative stamps and some important photographs of the first day.
- 10. The actual data time transmission rate of Aryabhata was 256 bits/second. Its internal temperature ranged from zero to 40 degrees Celsius.
- 11. Aryabhata re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere after 17 years on 11 February 1992.
