The Brihadeeswarar Temple at Tanjore was built in the 11th century by the Chola rulers. Whose first name was Rajjeshwar, but later the Maratha rulers changed its name to Brihadeshwar.
In that era, 130,000 tonnes of granite stone was used to build this temple, but it is not found anywhere around this area.
The height of this 13-story high temple is 66 meters and it is built on a 16 feet high concrete platform. This huge temple without a foundation was built in seven years by placing a stone on top of the stone. This temple has been built and renovated many times.
