IRCTC Introduces No-Cancellation Fee Tickets (Rescheduling Feature)
The Indian Railways, through the IRCTC portal, is preparing to roll out a significant passenger-friendly initiative: the option to reschedule a confirmed train ticket without paying the current high cancellation charges. This move aims to bring more flexibility and convenience to train travel, particularly for those facing sudden changes in their plans.
Key Details of the New Feature:
- What is Changing: Currently, passengers with a change in plans must cancel their confirmed ticket and book a new one for a different date, losing a significant portion of the original fare (up to 50% or the entire amount, depending on the time of cancellation). The new feature will introduce an online ‘Date Change’ or ‘Reschedule Journey’ option.
- No Cancellation Penalty: Passengers will be able to modify their travel date on a confirmed ticket and will not be charged the standard cancellation fee that is currently levied.
- Applicable Fee: The only payment required will be the difference in fare, if the ticket for the new travel date or train is more expensive. If the fare is equal or lower, no extra charge will be applied.
- Eligibility: The feature is expected to apply to confirmed e-tickets booked online through the IRCTC website or app. It will be subject to seat availability on the new chosen date/train.
- Rollout: The new policy is anticipated to be rolled out, with some reports suggesting an implementation from January 2026.
- Benefit: This is a major relief for passengers, as it eliminates the financial loss associated with cancelling and re-booking, simplifying the process of managing unexpected travel changes.
