Girish Wagh – The New MD & CEO of TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd. (TMLCV)

Girish Wagh is set to take charge as the Managing Director & CEO of the newly formed, separately listed entity, TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd. (TMLCV), effective October 1, 2025. This appointment is a key part of Tata Motors’ demerger process, which separates its Commercial Vehicle (CV) business from the Passenger Vehicle (PV), Electric Vehicle (EV), and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) businesses.


Career and Educational Background

Girish Wagh is a veteran of the Tata Motors Group with an impressive career spanning over three decades:

  • Long Tenure at Tata Motors: Mr. Wagh joined Tata Motors as a Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) in 1992 after completing his engineering degree from Pune University.
  • Education: He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Pune University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing Management from the S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai.
  • Prior Roles: Before his current appointment, he was serving as the Executive Director and Key Managerial Personnel (KMP) of Tata Motors Ltd. He has also served as the President and Head of the Commercial Vehicle Business Unit since July 2017. His earlier roles included leading operations for the Passenger Car Business Unit and heading the Project Planning and Program Management function for passenger vehicles.

Key Achievements and Projects

Mr. Wagh is best known for successfully leading several major, game-changing projects that redefined the Indian automotive landscape for Tata Motors:

  • Tata Ace Mini Truck: He was instrumental in designing and delivering the Tata Ace, which successfully created and dominated the mini-truck segment in India.
  • Tata Nano: He was a key figure in the Tata Nano project, Chairman Ratan Tata’s vision for a one-lakh car, leading the project planning and delivery under challenging constraints.
  • Passenger Vehicle Line-up: He led cross-functional teams and successfully delivered new-generation cars, including the Bolt, Zest, Tiago, Hexa, and Tigor.
  • Recognition: His contributions have earned him awards, including the ‘Rising Star’ by the Automotive News Europe in 2011 and ‘CV Man of the Year’ at the Apollo CV Awards 2020.

The New Mandate at TMLCV

As MD & CEO of TMLCV, Mr. Wagh will lead the newly listed entity focused solely on the Commercial Vehicle business.14 This move is designed to:

  • Sharpen Focus: Dedicate complete management attention to the distinct and cyclical demands of the CV market, including trucks, buses, and light commercial vehicles.
  • Strategic Direction: Oversee strategy and capital allocation tailored to infrastructure, logistics, and industrial growth cycles.
  • Governance: He will join the board of TML Commercial Vehicles Ltd., alongside other directors, effective October 1, 2025.

Girish Wagh’s resignation as Executive Director of Tata Motors is effective on the same day he takes over the leadership of TMLCV.
